Electronic cigarettes should be banned until safety concerns have been addressed, University of California researchers say.

Their study adds more fuel to the controversy over the battery-operated devices that contain nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. The issue heated up this fall when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cited five e-cigarette distributors for poor manufacturing practices and falsely claiming that the products help people stop smoking.

The study found serious flaws in e-cigarette products and health claims. The researchers evaluated six different brands of electronic cigarettes that were bought online and found that:

• Fluid containing nicotine leaked out of most cartridges.
• The devices were difficult to take apart or put together without getting nicotine all over the user’s hands.
• Nicotine cartridge labeling was poor, with most replacement packs lacking any indication of cartridge content, expiration date, or health warnings.
• Cartridges that claimed to have no nicotine content looked identical to those that claimed to have high nicotine content, making them indistinguishable once removed from their packs and wrappers.
• All brands had “ambiguous amounts of nicotine,” with stated levels ranging from 6 milligrams to 24 mg.
• None of the instruction leaflets or product Web sites offered adequate instructions for proper disposal of used cartridges.
• Safety features did not always work correctly.
• Print and Internet material often contained information or claims that could not be backed up by scientific evidence. Examples included: “Be careful to avoid inhaling any significant quantity of fluid. Although it gives you a slight tingling sensation, it is not harmful,” and “Within two weeks your lung capacity will increase by 30 percent … Wrinkles in your skin will become less noticeable.”

Because electronic cigarettes are smokeless, they are marketed to smokers for use in non-smoking areas.

But the researchers concluded that they should not be marketed at all — at least until they were safe to use. “Our observations,” they wrote, “provide evidence that regulators should consider removing [electronic cigarettes] from the market until design features, quality control, disposal and safety issues have been adequately addressed.”

The study was released online Tuesday in the journal Tobacco Control.

7 Public Speaking Survival Tips

I used to be terrified of public speaking – now it’s natural and fun.

Dry mouth, fast heart, sweaty palms, blank mind – yeah I’ve been there! It’s easy to fear public speaking. But I was never just content with overcoming fear. I wanted to be a great speaker. What I needed was a way of calming down and applying simple techniques and strategies to talk like a pro.

When I’d learned to relax (more of that later) I learned and applied the following four steps.

  1. Reassure your audience – they need to know you know your stuff and you are human!
  2. Hook them by being interesting and relevant. Tell them why what you are saying is relevant to them.
  3. Inspire them by giving them information and ways of seeing that are new and applicable.
  4. Leave them on a high by telling a story them encapsulates your central message.

How do you become confident enough to apply the four steps?

Here’s some tips some of which are practical some of which are to do with the way you think about your public presentations and also how you can start to change the way you feel about them.

Tip One

Breath your way to calm. When you breath out you relax that’s why people sigh when they’re stressed.

Breathing in without breathing out causes hyperventilation and worsens anxiety. Just before your speech take five minutes breathing in to the count of seven and out to the count of eleven (quick count-not seconds!). On the out breath hold it a second before breathing in again. This will produce quick and lasting calm. Remember extending the out breath calms you down.

Tip Two

You have a responsibility as the presenter but relax you don’t carry all the responsibility. Presenting is a team effort. Audiences are responsible for politeness, extending their attention and attempting to learn. It’s not all you-it’s a meeting of two halves. Never mind how they judge you. How do you judge them?

Tip Three

Use metaphor and stories. We all experience life metaphorically. The most technical logical person spends at least two hours a night dreaming! Talk detail if necessary but present patterns with metaphors. Folk from 4 to 104 love stories. Use em.

Tip four

Captivate attention by using words that evoke all the senses. Describe how things look, sound, feel, smell and taste. Paint pictures and sensations in their minds with your words.

Tip Five

Vary your voice tonality and speed of delivery. Keep them alert and engaged. Convey energy when need be and slow down when you need to ‘draw them in close.’ You are the conductor to their orchestra. And pepper your talk with humour. Your willingness to be funny shows personal confidence and confidence is contagious.

Tip Six

Tell them what they are going to get. What they are currently getting and then what they have got from you. Sell your sizzle!

Tip Seven

Watch and learn from other great speakers until compelling, relaxed speaking is a part of you.

Rehearse positively. You need to rehearse how your going to feel as well as what you are going to present. Don’t think about your forthcoming presentation whilst feeling nervous as this creates an instinctive association between fear and presenting. This natural negative self-hypnosis is very common with nervous speakers.

Hypnotically rehearse your speech whilst feeling relaxed. This produces the right ‘blueprint’ in your mind. In fact when you do this enough times it actually becomes hard to be nervous!

All great speakers know how to use great self-hypnotic rehearsal. Hypnosis changes attitudes and can bring emotion under control. I used hypnosis, to change my instincts around public speaking. Now I just can’t get nervous whether it’s 50 or 500 people. The world needs great communicators. Go for it!

Article by Mark Tyrrell of Hypnosis Downloads.com.

Are you curious about hypnosis? What do you already know about it? Your ideas may be influenced by the media, like T.V. shows or books that feature the all-knowing, powerful hypnotist.

However, hypnosis is an approved treatment for many illnesses. Hypnosis is widely used to help many types of issues, such as quitting smoking, losing weight, eliminating a phobia, relieving pain and more. Since 1958, The American Medical Association has recognized the benefits of hypnosis in treating many medical conditions.

Since you’re probably not following the latest news from the AMA, your exposure to hypnosis may only be from television programs or stage hypnosis. I want to highlight five common myths of hypnosis. Are yours on this list?

1. Hypnosis is mind control. This seems to be a very common perception and probably based on movies or novels books that have reinforced this image. Some people are curious about using hypnosis but are worried that being hypnotized would allow another individual to control their mind. While it makes for fun entertainment, it is absolutely false. The real truth is that hypnosis actually helps a person gain more control over his/her own mind.

2. The hypnotist has special powers. When you receive hypnosis treatment for a medical condition, you’ll be guided by a hypnotherapist, the accurate name for the person performing this process. Often, this misunderstanding is endorsed by live performances, or stage shows, done for entertainment purposes only. A hypnotherapist does not have any magical powers. He or she has simply studied specific techniques that will help an individual tap into various sections of their mind and allow them to become more open to certain suggestions.

3. There is a loss of awareness during hypnosis. This myth probably stems from people’s nervousness over how hypnosis works or what it feels like. You are not asleep, unconscious or unaware of your surroundings. During hypnosis, you’re in a relaxed state of mind. You can hear the hypnotherapist and noises around you. You’re in a calm but focused state.

4. Only weak-minded people can be hypnotized. This myth comes from the belief that hypnosis is solely based on one person controlling another person’s mind. However, based on extensive research conducted over the years, it has been shown that more intelligent people have a stronger grasp of hypnosis and are able to enter the relaxed state more easily.

5. Hypnosis is fake. Some people believe that hypnosis is only used as a means of entertainment or only happens to those who have an active imagination. There are plenty of entertaining hypnotists, and stage hypnosis can be a lot of fun. However, hypnosis itself is a very real tool in helping people overcome obstacles or illnesses and achieve success.

I hope I’ve smashed these myths for you. If you’re curious about hypnosis, please contact me. I’d love to talk to you about hypnosis can help you reach your goals.

Hi there, Cindy Locher blogging away! In a previous post about experiencing hypnosis, I mentioned that when you understand what hypnosis is you’ll recognize that fact that all of us experience hypnosis naturally and spontaneously every day. It’s just a natural brainwave (alpha) state that our minds go to in certain types of situations.

Please enjoy this video rendition of an original Hypnosis Today Radio show that explains some of the myths and misconceptions about hypnosis. When you’ve finished watching this, pop over to the post with the video hypnosis session and experience this wonderful, healthful state for yourself!

Read more about hypnosis myths on one of my other posts. Enjoy!

Much Love,

Cindy Locher

I hear this question a lot, and it really stems from a misunderstanding of what hypnosis is. We can ALL be hypnotized, it’s a natural brainwave state that we’re all in a few times a day, unintentionally. Once you understand the characteristics of hypnosis, you’d recognize when you’re in hypnosis.

Take this short quiz and see if YOU are hypnotizable (I guarantee you are!). CL

1. Are you able to follow simple instructions?
2. Have you ever daydreamed?
3. Can you imagine the sound of a train whistle blowing?
4. Have you ever been traveling in a car, lost in conversation and the travel time appeared to pass rather
quickly, or forget whole sections of the trip?
5. Can you sometimes arise from sleep to get a drink of water, or go to the bathroom, and go right back to sleep?
6. Are you willing to accept new ideas for change?
7. Have you ever ‘rested your eyes’ in front of a television set because you were too comfortable to get up
and go to bed?
8. Are you able to meditate or pray?
9. Have you ever been so caught up in reading a good book that you couldn’t put it down?
10. While listening to a favorite song, can you remember where you were, what you were doing and who you
were with when you first heard it?
11. Have you ever cried or been frightened while watching a movie?
12. Did you ever lose track of time while engrossed in something enjoyable?
14. Do you shudder at the thought of someone scratching his or her fingernails down the front of a
chalkboard?
15. Does your mouth water at the thought of sucking on, or biting into a plump, juicy, sour lemon?
16. Have you ever impulsively purchased a bag of popcorn, cinnamon roll or caramel apple because of the
aroma filtering through the air?
17. Do you have a good imagination?

If you answered YES to even a few of the questions posted above…
Congratulations!
You are definitely HYPNOTIZABLE!

You see, hypnosis is really focused imagination paired with emotion. If you desire a change in your life, feel strongly about making that change (or leaving an undesirable state of being behind), and can imagine your life with that change accomplished, then you can be hypnotized to realize that change in your life! If you want to learn self hypnosis and condition yourself to an effective hypnotic state for you, I’ve created the Self Hypnosis Training Audio to do just that. While you’re checking it out, imagine the changes you’d like to make in your life!

Love & Blessings,
